About

A forum for inquiry into current affairs, the State of the World Week at ECLA (SWWE) fulfils an integral part of ECLA’s educational mission by demonstrating the relevance of liberal arts studies to contemporary world events. Students choose the theme of the week and play a substantive role in the production of the programme.

This year, the topic of Water has been chosen. Water is the topic of the year 2008 of the UN-decade Education for Sustainable Development; a topic that raises questions around scarcity, ownership and the commodification of water that are strongly linked to the summer AY-summer core course The Ownership Society: Property In Modernity.

The SWWE 2008 is built on a set of morning lectures by international speakers, and on group projects. Students and faculty are jointly working out the final program.

Undergraduate students from other universities and ECLA-alumni are welcome during the week. If you would like to attend the SWW 2008, please send an email briefly stating your motivation to Fiona Schnuettgen (f.schnuettgen [at] ecla.de) by April 22. Participation at the conference and accommodation is free, but travel costs cannot be reimbursed. There is only a limited number of places available for external students, and early application therefore highly encouraged. If you have questions regarding the aims and program of the SWW 2008, please send an email to Rafael Ziegler (R.Ziegler [at] ecla.de).

The SWW 2008 has been accredited by UNESCO as an event for the decade for education for sustainable development
